Hmmm, apparently e-gold is now asking US members for their social security number and foreign users for their “Personal Tax ID Number.” You can’t do anything with your account until you provide e-gold with this information. See the screenshot below (click on the thumbnail to enlarge):
Kudos to okosh who’s forum thread over here made me aware of this issue. *Sigh* I guess I’m gonna have to fork over my Tax ID to e-gold (and probably idirectly to IRS or god knows what other US government authorities.) Apparently teh fact that I sent them my drivers license is not enough proof of identity to them. Although my hunch is that they aren’t collecting this info as proof of identity but more of less a way for e-gold to report your gold assets to tax collecting authorities. Hold on a second while I take off my conspiracy theory hat. Ok, done.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Well, with this interesting news the cynic in says something like, “Of course the US Government wants to track the eGold accounts. With these bailouts they need access to some with real value.”

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. We (I include myself as I was thinking this too at the time) could be wrong. My hunch now is that they’re shifting to a more traditional US financial institution role, and thus they have to play the US Government’s game and spy on its customers – ie they have to become an unwitting tool of the IRS. But anyways, I hope e-gold make it through this restructuring as I am very much fond of their services. They were my first introduction to the digital gold currency market and it would a great loss if they disappeared.

I miss the good old days of e-Gold.
The new e-Gold now with the monkeys on her back is no longer the same.
Not sure if we can trust her anymore ………
Wish we could catch those monkeys, skin them and roast them for dinner. LOL…..
(monkeys = FED, SEC etc….)

Hmm, yes I know how you feel but those monkeys are attached with superglue and I don’t foresee getting rid of them anytime soon.

Hi everyone…I’m the real Dave….there :p…
lol, well yeah I too don’t mind giving them my social security number if it means that I can conduct my e-gold business without being harassed by e-gold or fear the possibility of the government taking my assets.
